We all know that the number one search engine consumers use is Google.  Every year Google search, especially local search, gets better and better.  And why not?  Google knows that if a buyer in Worcester, Massachusetts is looking to buy a plasma tv, chances are pretty good there would be little interest if Google produced search results for a store in Denver , Colorado.  Google knows where where the buyer is (from their ip address) so it makes sense to provide the best local results.

It wasn’t too long ago when an internet search for a product or service returned some pretty strange search results.  The top ten results on Google page one would include directory listings, article sites, large online store listings, forums and blogs.  If you read through some of the listings, they had nothing to do with what you were searching for…it was crazy.  It was the wild west!

Today, Google has taken back the page one results which is some pretty expensive real estate in the search world.  It’s called Google Places.  Today when you search for a product in a city, for example “tires, Worcester”,   you will see a listing of seven businesses with red tear drops next to the names as well as a local map.

This batch of listing is called the “Seven Pack”.  Google has literally squashed other search results by pushing them down page one and on to page two.  This creates a pretty competitive arena for local business to fight to get into the seven pack.  And if your business happens to land in the seven with little to no work, luck is on your side.  But make no mistake…the future will be very competitive and you may disappear quickly!

Google Places is the future of local consumer marketing –  In fact, it’s the “now” of local consumer marketing.  If you want to grow your business, you have to absolutely take advantage of this trend.  Google has again shown us that local search results are only going to get more and more important over time.  By capitalizing on Google Places optimization now, you will be able to get a strong foothold in you local marketplace.
